Sukset Ristiin Susirajalla - Summer Academy of Multidisciplinary Art
Sukset Ristiin Susirajalla Summer Academy of Multidisciplinary Art is a legendary jewel of multidisciplinary art studies, a week-long art course experience, a rare and matchless art academy offering creative cross-pollination of different art forms and artistic expression. The academy takes place annually just after midsummer in Nurmes, in North Karelia in eastern Finland.
In the coming summer, the Summer Academy will take place from Mon 10 July to Sat 15 July 2023.
The Artistic Director of the Summer Academy is the artist Elina Pirinen. The Summer Academy offers a delicious, deep and fun vision for combining arts and studying dance, stage, performance, literary and visual arts as well as listening to current trends, creating new combinations and understanding the historical canons of different methods. The Summer Academy is well-established as one of the most significant and unique national platforms that teach dance and its companion arts. It is communal, it's feminist, it's experimental, it's smart, it's fun and wacky, it's dialogic and gentle, it's imaginative and packed with wonderful creative craziness.
Between 40 and 60 participants study at the Summer Academy every year. The week-long Summer Academy is aimed at professional artists and students of all ages and backgrounds, as well as first-timers and art enthusiasts from different contexts. In the courses, everyone studies together, crisscrossing between professional identities and enthusiasts, under precise, gentle and ethical guidance.
Participation in the Summer Academy and all the experiences it holds within only costs 360€ per person, including courses, school accommodation and nutritious vegetarian meals created by a local chef.
Every year, we get to witness all the good things that happen to a person who "moves into art for a week", develops themselves in a profound way, while at the same time getting support for who they are as a person through studying art, meeting like-minded people and getting to study art together with them. Especially in the aftermath of the pandemic and amid the violent turmoil of the ongoing war, studying art in a peaceful environment, close to nature and together again with others can be an empowering experience.
